"Cheaper by the Dozen" Theatre Show |
|
|
Diedrichs & Associates, Inc. is sponsoring a play at the Oster Regent Theater in Cedar Falls. You may be asking why would an engineering firm sponsor a play? This play Cheaper By The Dozen has an underlying engineering-related theme. It is based on the true life story of a man named Frank Gilbreth and his adventures raising twelve children. He is a world-famous expert in efficiency, and often uses his children as guinea pigs to test out his different theories. It is one laugh after another as Mr. Gilbreth tries to control his circus of children. In conjunction with the play, Diedrichs and the Society of Women Engineers-East Central Iowa Section are sponsoring an essay contest for middle school/junior high students. An interesting fact about the Gilbreth family is that Frank's wife Lillian was herself a high-profile engineer, even as she raised her brood of children alone after the early death of her husband. Also known as "the First Lady of Industrial Engineering," she was one of the first people to incorporate psychology into industrial planning, and many modern management techniques are based on ideas she put forward almost a century ago. |
