Jim has 50 years of experience in hydraulics and structures. He has also worked as a project manager in engine applications for fuel supply and fan cooling systems.
Background
Jim's career started at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, where he was the liaison engineer in the manufacturing process of airplanes. After that, Miller joined Rock Island Arsenal, and designed military weapons. At John Deere, Jim worked on hydraulics and structures.
Since joining us in 2002, Jim has worked on a variety of projects from analysis and resolution of mechanical, hydraulic and vibration problems to development of new implement and vehicle systems.
Over his career, Miller has worked on a number of projects and technical investigations. The following list illustrates the wide variety of projects that Jim has worked on:
• Polymer Injection Machine (shown in picture, click to learn more)
- Developed, as a team member, an agricultural implement for injection of fluid polymer into soil (6 patents granted)
• Seat Display Machine (click to learn more)
- Resolved dynamic problems on the Active Seat Display.
• Failure Analysis (click to learn more)
- Hydraulic Components and stainless parts subjected to high physical and chemical stress
• Manifold Distribution System
- Developed key mechanism for injection of fluid material into soil (3 patents granted)
• Hydraulic System Design
- Improve function of electro hydraulic valve system on boom truck cranes
• Vehicle Cooling Design
- Design of cooling systems for off-road vehicles
• Vehicle Cooling Analysis
- Analysis, and testing of many different vehicle cooling problems
• Fan Flow
- Resolve fan flow problems for 50 to 500 hp off-road vehicles.
- Analyze problems, developed solutions and build and test prototypes
• Heat Exchangers
- Develop various side-by-side and series type heat exchanger systems
• Turbochargers
- Design turbocharger systems with and without charge air cooling
• Exhaust Gas Cooling
- Worked on systems for cooling exhaust gas and recirculating into combustion cycle.
• Cooling Core Development
- Worked with suppliers to develop new arrangements and conducted test to evaluate results.
• Cooling Design Improvement
- Performed partial derivative study of cooling package elements to identify elemental areas having potential for improvement.
• Hood Design
- Fixed and hinged, to satisfy styling, cooling and safety goals.
• Fuel Tank Design
- Design of tanks and related plumbing for 50 to 500 hp off-road vehicles.
• Chassis Design
- Design of vehicle frames for 50 to 500 hp off-road vehicles to meet objectives of allowable stress, turning radius, accessory attachment points and styling goals.
• Chassis Testing
- Testing of vehicle chassis, using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and laboratory studies using stress coat, strain gage, cycle testing and accelerated load testing.
• Brake Systems
- Design and development of a two stage brake valve system. Patent granted.
• Load Sensing
- Developed a load sense hydraulic system for construction equipment.
• Programmed Analysis
- Developed and programmed a series of computer routines for fluid flow in an annulus, a line (laminar, transitional and turbulent flow) or an orifice. This is still used for analysis of hydraulic systems.
• Military Systems
- Design of mounting systems to integrate military ordnance onto military aircraft
